Lowland vegetables in Indonesia, 1987

Collectors: Q.P. van der Meer a.o.

Introduction

The project aimed to establish:

  • An operational germplasm unit and strengthened technical research capacity at the Lembang Horticultural Research Institute (LEHRI), supporting the regular release of improved lowland vegetable varieties and the development of cultivation techniques adapted to prevailing production systems.
  • A monitoring system to assess and evaluate the agro-economic aspects of lowland vegetable production systems.
  • An experimental farm specifically equipped for research and development on lowland vegetables.

Not all collected samples originated from Indonesia. Some seed samples purchased at local markets originated from Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Duplicates of many collected samples were sent to AVRDC in Taiwan and may still be available through its genebank. Many samples were also donated to East West Seeds in Indonesia, a breeding company that was in its start-up phase at the time. Some of this material was successfully incorporated into its breeding programme. All germplasm retained at Lembang was subsequently lost.

The collection of local and imported shallot clones was also lost, although these varieties are reportedly still grown by local farmers. Extensive research was conducted on these clones (personal communication). References to some of this work are provided below.

Although additional survey reports and collection forms probably exist, only two collection reports and copies of some Brassica collection forms could be located. The six-digit numbers in the upper-right corner of the Brassica forms correspond to entries in the “RNR” column of the accompanying Excel list. The reports contain only one identifiable reference to material held in the CGN collection: cucumber sample LV 1100, conserved as accession CGN23430.
